Monsignor James S. Conlan Council #5329 – April 2019 Activities Summary

2019 Annual College Scholarship Essay – Annually our Council offers a $500 scholarship for a graduating senior that lives in the Pine Bush School District and is a practicing Catholic. Essays are submitted on a topic chosen by the Scholarship Committee and then voted upon by that Committee. Essay submissions are due in by June 15, 2019. Our Essay Committee then reviews each essay and selects a winner. If you are interested in entering or might know somebody who would be interested in doing so you can find out more about how to enter, this year’s essay theme, and all the other details here.

Good Friday Works of Mercy for the Poor – Our Council helped out at St. Mary’s Outreach (180 South St.; Newburgh, NY) on Good Friday (4/19/19) to distribute food and clothing to needy throughout the morning. You can read more about this volunteer event here. Thank you to all the Brother Knights who donated time to this great Work of Mercy For the Poor. Nice job!

Crucifix Adorned With Easter Sash – Our Council again this year put up the outdoor crucifix display at the Church of the Infant Saviour for Lent back on March 5, 2019 (Ash Wednesday). With the beginning of the Easter Season we returned on Saturday; April 20, 2019 to change the sash to white for Easter. You can read more about the event here.  Thank you to all the Brother Knights who donated time to help out. The display will remain up throughout the remainder of the liturgical Easter season that concludes on Pentecost (June 8, 2019). The Cross looked great this year and the display was a beautiful visible reminder of the Lent and Easter season for all who passed by the Church!

Thank You Pat Ditizio — Mrs. Patricia Ditizio, the Parish Office Secretary of the Church of the Infant Saviour has decided to resign due to some personal needs. Pat has been the Parish Office secretary for the past 14 years. She is the wife of our Council’s Deputy Grand Knight, Joe Ditizio. Our Council has received her help so many times over the past many years especially with coordinating our events within the Parish and assisting us with notifications in the Church Bulletin. She works diligently behind the scenes to help out at the Church, serve our Parish Community, and assist our Council in so many ways including at our events. She does so humbly and in service to God and his people. Her assistance and volunteer work have been key to making so many things we do successful. All the Knights in our Council want to thank Pat for her help and wish her the best!

Annual Officers Elections – Our Council Officers for the June 2019- May 2020 Fraternal Year will remain the same as per vote by those Brother Knights in attendance during our most recent Council meeting on Thursday; May 9, 2019. You can see the list of who those Brother Knights are here. Thank you to all our Council Officers and Program Directors who so generously donate their time to provide leadership and volunteer in service to our Council.

Monsignor James S. Conlan Council #5329 – Looking Ahead

Council Yard Sale Fundraiser – We are gauging interest from our Council members to see if on  Saturday; May 25, 2019 we could host a Yard Sale fundraiser to raise additional funds this year for our various works of mercy, charity, and faith done throughout the year. The Town of Crawford sponsors a yearly “Townwide Yard Sale” that day so there will be other yard sales throughout the area. If we can get support from our Brother Knights for this event we will post more info in the coming weeks about it. If you are a Brother Knight interested in helping out at this proposed event please contact us and let us know.

K of C HV Chapter Honor Flight Wheelchair Fundraiser – Our Council’s Chapter (the Knights of Columbus Hudson Valley Chapter) is sponsoring a fundraiser for Knights Councils within the Chapter to donate money towards wheelchairs to be used by the Hudson Valley Honor Flight to transport disabled and elderly veterans throughout the event. The Honor Flight program allows elderly and disabled veterans to visit the memorials in Washington DC at no charge. The flight features a “mail call” and there are ceremonies held at each flight take off and return. This is an amazing cause and great way to honor those who have sacrificed greatly for our freedoms. Our Council will be donating money for one wheelchair to assist the HV Chapter in reaching its commitment to provide the Honor Flight with 60 wheelchairs for veterans this year.

K of C RSVP Program – The Knights of Columbus Supreme sponsors a program called RSVP (Refund Support Vocations Programs). For every $500 a Council or Assembly donates to support a seminarian, Supreme will reimburse that Council or Assembly $100 until you hit the $400 refund max (which means the seminarian received $2,000 in support). This program is one way that the Knights help foster the religious vocation and how we continue to support priest, bishops, and the Church in making sure there are future clergy to serve it and its Catholic faith community. Annually our Council participates in this program by supporting a seminarian. The seminarian who we supported the last three years was ordained a priest last year. We are waiting on the local Catholic seminaries to let us know if they have a new seminarian in need of support this year. If they do, we will “adopt” that seminarian and make a donation towards offsetting their vocational education costs.
